The Conservancy is the home of Wildbird Recovery, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of wildlife and natural resources. We have the permits, expertise, and facilities to rehabilitate species of her size. The Raptor Trust has provided free medical care to all species of wild birds since 1983. Animal Control in that state transported her to our facility for care. This beautiful female adult Bald Eagle was discovered on the ground, along a road, and unable to fly. One of our volunteers, along with the expert help of Delaware Bay and River Cooperative, released the healed and healthy bird back to the open sea. Stormy Oaks Nature Conservancy is located on 14 acres of farmland in Butler County of western Pennsylvania. It gained weight, its waterproofing became stellar, and it dove expertly for food-ultimately demonstrating it was ready to go back to the sea.
With proper care, nutritious meals, and pool exercise, the young murre soon grew strong and well. Many animals do need immediate care, but often, well-meaning people with the best of intentions rescue young birds and mammals who, in fact, are perfectly. Once in our care, we performed a thorough examination and found that the wayward bird was generally debilitated. It was very unusual for this second-year seabird not only to be on land, but also to be in a city! They are a pelagic species and spend most of their lives on open ocean waters, gathering in colonies on land in the arctic only to breed and raise their single chick each year. Found stranded in Brooklyn, NY (yes, THAT Brooklyn) after a storm, this Thick-billed Murre was rescued and transported all the way to our clinic by our colleagues at Wild Bird Fund in New York City.
